How to choose the right builder: 7 questions to ask before signing

Published on

References, insurance, a detailed quote and timelines: what to check so you can hire with confidence.

Choosing a contractor for your home is an important decision. These are the questions we always recommend asking.

1. Can you show me similar work?

Ask for photos, addresses and, if possible, contacts of previous clients.

2. Is the company fully compliant?

Check its business registration, social security compliance certificate (DURC) and third-party liability insurance.

3. Is the quote itemised?

A good quote lists individual works, materials and quantities. Be wary of lump-sum figures with no detail.

4. What is the timeline?

Ask for a written schedule with the main phases.

5. Who will be my point of contact?

Having a single contact person avoids misunderstandings.

6. How do you manage safety?

A serious contractor prepares its own site safety plan and keeps the site tidy.

7. What guarantees do you offer?

Ask about warranties on the work and after-sales support.
